It can come as no great secret that the perfect tablecloth can only exist if the cloth is measured accurately in the first place. There can be few things more displeasing than seeing oilcloth, pvc or vinyl tablecloths that are either too large or too small, draping poorly over a table.
The result of poor measurements is a table cloth that is particularly unattractive. On rectangular tables, the cloth may hang too long on the ends, and too short along the lengths, while on square tables, all four sides could be too short or too long. An oilcloth tablecloth may hang nicely at the corners, but will look uneven, while a vinyl tablecloth can be less supple and for that reason look more uneven still.
Oval and round tables are even more difficult to measure correctly, and should the measurements be wrong the error will look particularly bad. For all tablecloth venders, whose job it is to cut and hem the cloth itself, getting the right length, width or diameter is nothing short of essential, and for online venders, this is particularly true. The fact is that there are a series of rules and guidelines that need to be applied to if such vital information is to be gathered properly.
A Square Table
It might seem that nothing could be easier than measuring a square table. After all, according to definition, all four sides are the same size. But there is a need to be careful when using the measuring tape. Be sure that the tape end is square with the corner, and that the tape itself is taut and is not slack. This is the only way to get an accurate figure. Measure two sides just to be sure they match, then add an extra 20cms or 25cms per side to facilitate the overhang. Without this extra amount, the cloth will not hang properly, depriving the table of the attractive flowing affect.
Generally, the material comes in a set width, which should be enough to facilitate any normally sized table. This is usually 135cms, which means that only a large table will require something more.
A Rectangular Table
A rectangular table requires the same attention that the square table does, with the added, though rather obvious, factor that there is a long and a short end. These ends should be clearly labelled, and should always be double checked.
In making the measurement, the tape end must be placed square with the table edge and the tape stretched taut along the length, or width. Once these figures are established, add a further 20cms or 25cms on each side for the overhang.
A Circular Table
It is pointless to measure around the edges when measuring a circular table. In fact, it is easier than the process involved in measuring straight edged tables. Simply measure the diameter of the table surface, which is the length directly from one side to the other, and add a further 40cms or 50cms to facilitate the overhang.
The more important factor when carrying out the measurement is to ensure that the tape goes through the centre point of the table. If this is not the case then the measurement will be wrong, providing a slightly smaller diameter than is true, and therefore spoiling the look.
An Oval Table
An oval table requires a little more care since there is a length to consider. However, the process really involves measuring the two separate diameters. The first relates to the width, while the second related to the length. The important thing to remember, of course, is that the line of measurement goes though the central point of the table. Also, remember to add the extra 25cms for the overhang.
Because an oval has no straight sides, like a circle, making the widest point and longest point meet with a curve is then easily achieved. So when the table cloth vender cuts the material, the perfect cut can be achieved and the perfectly draped oval vinyl tablecloth on a long oval dining room table.
Of course, these process relate to all cloths, with oilcloth, pvc and vinyl tablecloths not differing in any way when it comes to getting the right measurements.
