I get asked frequently about how difficult meditation is to learn. Learning the basics is really very straightforward. It is both easy and enjoyable to learn. In fact there is really only 5 things that a learner needs to know to get started. Taking time out to follow these steps will be worth it as meditation brings so many benefits to our health mentally and physically.

To begin with, we need to have a quiet place in which we can relax undisturbed. The place itself, be it a room at home or perhaps outside in the garden, needs to promote relaxation, with surroundings being peaceful and calm. The problem with attempting to meditate in a place in which you find it difficult to be at ease or where there are opportunities for distraction, your attempts are doomed to fail and meditation cannot take place.

Next is all about relaxation. There are numerous scientific papers that suggest the best way to start the process is to relax each part of your body separately beginning with the feet and working your way up. This may be familiar to you if you have ever had any hypnosis. It simply involves sitting comfortably and focusing on the feet using your thoughts to tell your feet to relax before moving slowly towards your head. This can take a little practice but you will soon feel the difference. Just let it occur naturally and dont force the issue.

Next we take our now fully relaxed body and take things to the next level. Close your eyes and slow breathing down, and become really aware of your breathing as you do so. Each breathe should be deep and long, taking as much as 5 times longer than normal and exhaling should be the same, nice slow and controlled. Meditation begins with good controlled breathing.

In this fourth step, we need to stay with breathing, taking a mental note of how many we take. Over a period of a few minutes gradually increase the amount of inhalations you take. By doing this you will find yourself relaxing even deeper than before.

The final thing to keep in mind is about learning to focus your mind. This varies greatly with each and every individual so there is no definite time period to get this perfected, but with practice it is very easily achieved. What you choose to focus on could be anything at all, as long as you remained focused on that particular thought. It may even be a noise in the distance. For most it is an object held in the mind. Dont get frustrated if the object of focus slides away, this is normal. All you need to do is recall the object back to your mind. Practice really does make perfect.

Another way to keep a focused mind is to use guided meditation and these bring many benefits and help to the meditation novice.
